本课程向观众介绍北宋著名学者沈括，和他具有世界影响的著作《梦溪笔谈》。

在国际上，研究《梦溪笔谈》及其作者沈括被称为“梦学”，它横跨社会科学和自然科学诸多学科领域，是一门综合性的学科。本课程探索采用慕课的方式，通过丰富的案例、通俗的形式和生动的语言，向观众展示近年来“梦学”研究所取得的一些重要的，特别是自然科学方面的成果。同时，着眼于沈括的人生经历和北宋的社会现实，以及古代中国的学术传统，探讨“创新型”人才的成长规律，专制主义时代学者的生存状态，古代中国科技发展的成就与不足等问题。旨在通过主讲人的讲授，在介绍学科、传授知识的同时，提高观众的科学和人文素养。

本课程探索使用双语教学。
